Checks that your transmitter and receiver work before you rely on them, usually on the ground before start-up or on first contact with a new station. You state the frequency so the station can confirm you are tuned correctly.

• Readability scale: 1 unreadable, 2 readable now and then, 3 readable but with difficulty, 4 readable, 5 perfectly readable.
• Keep the check short. A radio check is not a chance to pass other requests.
• If you are told readability 3 or worse, check volume and squelch, then try the next frequency.
